About Me

I'm artech, also known as artechthedvdplayer or (formerly) retro_person.

I know how to program in:

• TI-57 assembly
• Intel 4004 assembly
• Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
• Squeak/Smalltalk
• ...and a few other programming languages in which I am not fluent enough to feel confident listing here.

I also do 3D modeling in SketchUp and Blender (contact me for commissions!).

I mostly do old computer stuff and media archival, from the 1960s to 2000s.
Some goofy stuff I've done includes:

• (c. Dec. 2020) Running SGI's IRIX operating system on a chromebook through a Linux VM, WINE and MAME (image, post)
• (c. Dec. 2021) Writing a simple, (pseudo-)random-number guessing game on a 1977 TI-57, within 50 program steps and 8 numeric memory registers, that would tell you higher or lower and keep track of your score
• (c. Feb. 2024) Implementing a simple raytracer in the October 2003 version of Scratch (screenshot, project file)
• (c. early 2023) (attempting to) Restore Douglas Engelbart's NLS (oN-Line System), as prominently featured in the "Mother of All Demos" of December 1968, as it was in late 1969 (github repository)

I also currently (07/20/24) co-own and co-manage TBCA, The Block Coding Archive (along with Katie and HalfHalf/save_as), whose goal is to preserve all media pertaining to block- and tile-based programming languages, mostly by MIT's E.&L.G. and LLK Group, and their predecessors and inspirations. I wrote a brief history of tile-based programming (as of 12/22/24 quite outdated) recently, as well as finally HTML-ifying my Lisp-based Logo Blocks tutorial (HTML-ified version can be found here).
